Goals of Composition I and II and Basic Writing

Here are the summary goals. For a more detailed

Students should note that they are required to earn a "C" or better in
order to pass English 1003 and English 1013 as well as English 0002 (Basic
Writing). Students scoring below a 19 on the English portion of the ACT
must take Basic Writing before moving on to Comp I.
Composition I (1003):
- Introduction to written academic discourse with a variety
of rhetorical purposes, including narratives, personal essays, analytical
and critical papers, and situation-based papers
- Assistance in improving prewriting, drafting, revision, editing, and
proofreading skills, some of it though collaborative learning
- Practice and instruction in standard English usage
- Instruction in writing papers that are more directly argumentative and
which might employ research and documentation
Composition II (1013):
- Practice in all phases of writing academic essays, most of
which are argumentative in nature
- Instruction in research methods (library, Internet,
interview, etc.)
- Instruction in documentation skills (usually the MLA style
of parenthetical documentation)
- Practice in writing papers with outside sources
- Further practice in standard English usage
Basic Writing (0002):
- A prerequisite to Composition I, intensive, more
individualized practice in standard English usage
- Practice in writing assignments that are mostly in class and
which will focus
almost entirely on drafting, organizing, and structuring sentences,
paragraphs, and short essays
- Additional assistance in improving prewriting, revision,
editing, and proofreading skills
