She didn’t cry, but Avondale Elementary School kindergarten teacher Alexia Weimer (pictured above with Arkansas Education Commissioner Tom Kimbrell, (left) and Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe) was speechless when told on Monday, November 26, 2012 that she was the Arkansas Teacher of the Year.

“For the first time in my life, I don’t know what to say,” said Weimer, who received the award during an assembly that she thought was held to honor the Marion School District’s pre-kindergarten through first grade school. The elementary school on the northwestern edge of West Memphis sits inside a sliver of the Marion School District.

Literacy Center to Open

The reading faculty has advocated for a literacy center on the Jonesboro campus, and Dr. Thilla Sivakumaran, Dean of the College of Education, has been working to make it happen.

A group of seven ASU faculty and local public school representatives visited Emporia State University’s Teachers College and Professional Development School program in March, 2013.

Dr. Andy Mooneyhan Receives Excellence in Professional Service Award

Dr. Andy Mooneyhan, associate professor of physical education in the College of Education, was named the recipient of the 2012-13 Faculty Achievement “Excellence in Professional Service” Award during the 35th annual Convocation of Scholars ceremony at Arkansas State University in April.
